What's not really arguable is that most open front and back dynamic headphones have a response below 1kHz that is inappropriately shaped given what we know of people's preferences. The HD600 and DT990 are completely different headphones to begin with. I find such generalised questions to be difficult to answer to be honest. To me it's a much better pair of headphones as a result. While the trebles response is wildly uneven (reminds me of some Focal headphones I've listened to), it's also at a more appropriate level for me. The APM has considerably better FR stability and channel matching than the K371 though, and sample variation is lower as well. I've only ever measured one pair of HD650 in situ, but with pads at a different state of ageing, this is an average of them. The APM, K3 traces are averages of several samples collected over time, each an average of several seatings. "No difference" would be shown by the graph above as a flat line at 0. This is a considerable advantage over passive headphones.Įven though you wouldn't think so looking at measurements performed on ear simulators, the wired headphones which overall balance is the closest, to me, are, for better or worse, the K371, as attested by in situ measurements, here showing the difference between the APM and various other headphones with blocked ear canal entrance mics : I prefer the AirPods Max over most - but not all ! - wired headphones that's I've tried, but this has less to do with them being wireless or wired, and not even with them sounding particularly great (they're inexcusably flawed IMO), but rather most headphones being just plain crap, including most "audiophile" headphones, regardless of whether they're wired or not.īesides, the AirPods Max are one of the few examples of a very good implementation of active feedback, ie the response below 800Hz or so is constant regardless of seal, to a degree, and as a bonus that's only rarely seen, even among active headphones, for which it's easier to achieve than any other type, rather well shaped as well. In other words wireless vs wired is less of a concern to me than FR. As of 2022 I'm far less confident in my capacity to A/B blind 256kbps AAC over bluetooth (from an iDevice though !) vs wired than rather minute differences in equalisation and / or FR.
